As reported by The World Bank in July 2020 (article), global gas flaring has increased to 150 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2019, a 3% increase from 2018. By comparison, this staggering volume is equivalent to the total annual gas consumption of Sub-Saharan Africa. Outside of the obvious impact to greenhouse gas levels, a tremendous amount of value is also going up in flames.
When a flare can be turned into a usable liquid product, value is realized in multiple ways. There is a significant reduction in greenhouse gasses and local air pollution. The liquid product can be marketed locally or used downstream, generating revenue and displacing carbon-intensive energy. Flare capture projects also align with company and investor goals to support net-zero carbon emissions.
